East meets West in Sonate des Saisons: I have the honour to collaborate for the first time with the internationally acclaimed Chinese calligrapher Ngan Siu-Mui on this multidisciplinary project which will fuse Eastern and Western cultures into the cinematic presentation. Her works are well represented in the collections worldwide, including the Canadian Museum of History (Gatineau, Quebec), Taishan Museum (Guangdong, China), and Art House Gallery (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).

In preparation for the creation of the art work, she remarked, “The brush movements of Chinese calligraphy involve the passage of time in delaying the stroke and the physical energy embedded in the stroke at that moment. The calligraphic art can be compared to music: we could say that calligraphy, viewed by the eyes, is silent music. I am inspired by Minna Re Shin’s performance of Rachel Laurin’s Sonate, Op. 2, and for this project, my brush movements will take on a freer and more spontaneous form.”
