The celebration of a prolific composer’s legacy: My multidisciplinary project Sonate des Saisons draws inspiration from the technically and musically challenging work Sonate pour piano en mi mineur, Op. 2 (1982) by the Canadian woman composer Rachel Laurin, who wrote music from the heart and with passion. During the very preliminary stage of preparation of this musical œuvre, I had numerous exchanges of correspondence with Rachel. And when she learned that I intended to bring my creative project, consisting of a digital recording and video of her Sonate, Op. 2, to life, she expressed a keen interest in the ambitious project:

“Je suis très enthousiaste à l’idée que me propose Minna : la danse, l’art calligraphique et la musique représentent le mariage parfait de plusieurs formes d’art et j’ai toujours eu une approche très ‘visuelle’ dans la conception de mes compositions musicales… J’ai déjà vu ce que Minna produit avec son incroyable équipe, et je sais le succès qu’elle connaît déjà dans toutes ses prestations musicales et artistiques. Elle a une approche très créative et innovante, utilisant l’aspect visuel pour servir la musique, et comme interprète-virtuose, tout ce qu’elle entreprend est empreint d’une grande profondeur musicale.”

Unfortunately, before I was able to set my Sonate des Saisons project in motion, Rachel passed away unexpectedly in August 2023 at the age of 62. In light of her sudden departure, this innovative project will not only honour her memory but also celebrate the world-première commercial recording of this unknown yet powerful piano work written by a Canadian composer and interpreted by Canadian artists of different cultural backgrounds, uniting refined talent, artistic creativity, and unique vision in the multifaceted presentation.
